Extension Overload acts as an Extensions Manager substitute, but enables you to activate extensions and control panels on the fly. you can also preview and enable fonts. Best known for its searchable database, it contains detailed descriptions of thousands of extensions, control panels and control strip modules, both Apple and third party. The data is presented in panels for easy review, but database searches can be conducted by name or description.

Installer Observer is a simple but invaluable tool for in avoiding disasters when installing new software. Installer Observer records the state of all the files in your system folder (and others if desired). It then records all changes to the files, such as additions, deletions, movements and updates. Files in the report windows may be revealed in the Finder, labelled, disabled, deleted, or marked to be ignored in future Observer runs.

iOrganize's NotePad module allows you to define note categories including Internet URLs. Notes are editable, searchable and sortable. The ContactPad module provides a comprehensive address book, which is sortable and highly configurable. The AliasPad module gives you a means of organising all your aliases in a single location. Drag-and-drop is fully implemented in all modules and Internet URLs can be activated from anywhere in iOrganize. Import, export and printing functions are provided in all modules.

Mail Forward allows you to forward mail from up to 20 Hotmail or standard POP e-mail accounts to any e-mail address. Mail is forwarded through your standard SMTP mail server, and then cleared from the Hotmail inbox or POP mailbox. (SMTP Servers requiring POP authentication are not supported.) The Hotmail or POP return address is retained, so if the mail is undeliverable it will be bounced back to the original account. Mail Forward is great for travellers, and its interface couldn't be simpler.

Originally designed as an MP3 player, MPLAY now supports many audio formats, plus images and video. As well as the usual features such as playlists and skins, MPLAY's separate playback engines offer some unique functions, including track mixing with the audio track mixer (it enables DJ-like mixes). For each song you can adjust volume, pitch, overlap, fade-in and fade-out. This is made easy by a graphic display. You can also set the stereo balance, treble and bass individually for each song in the playlist.

MultiTimer Pro is a job timer and expense tracker which is both elegant and easy to use. It can start a timer when specified files are opened, or automatically launch a defined set of files when a particular timer is started. Several timers can be run simultaneously. Session time and expense records are maintained in a log which is fully editable and configurable, and notes can be attached to log entries. Many timing and charging parameters are definable, and a small floating window shows timer status and accumulated time.

QuickFinance is a personal finance program which allows you to track and reconcile transactions in an unlimited number of bank or credit accounts. Transactions are editable and searchable. Several summary reports and 3D graphs are available, and data can be exported to a spreadsheet if required. A clean and logical interface, together with a comprehensive manual, make QuickFinance easy to use, even if you have no accounting knowledge.

Designed for novice Mac users who sometimes type in languages other than English, StevePerfect has an odd but interesting set of features. It sports an Aqua look and feel (plus a number of alternative 'themes') and supports WorldScript extensions, Navigation Services, coloured text, a dictionary client and more. You can play music and watch the BBC World News live while you work on the same screen. StevePerfect is useful and interesting.

Almost as quick to launch as SimpleText, yet vastly more capable, Tex-Edit Plus is a fast and serious text editor. You can create styled and coloured text with graphics for program documentation, but still have access to the powerful search and change functions needed by programmers and email recipients. You can directly create read-only documents of unlimited length. Tex-Edit supports Apple services such as AppleScript, Drag&Drop, Word Services and Speech Manager, and handles pictures, sound and movies.

Transmit is a simple but highly competent FTP client, ideally suited to uploading and maintaining Web sites. A two-pane window interface shows local and remote folders, and enables you to transfer files by dragging. You can also rename or delete files, create folders and rearrange files using Finder-like actions. Transmit can resume interrupted file transfers, and site mirroring is easy. There is a favourites function for quick access to your sites, and contextual menus are provided to access all common functions.
